Muhammad Akram Karimi
Chief Technology Officer
Saher Flow Solutions
Muhammad Akram Karimi received his B.Eng. degree in electrical engineering with two gold medals from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan, in 2013. He has been an intern in Mentor Graphics and worked as an Embedded System Developer with MicroTech industries after his graduation.
He received his M.S. and PhD degrees from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia, in 2015 and 2019 respectively. He has made contributions in the field of microwave sensors for various industrial applications. He has designed and developed several printed and conformable microwave sensors to sense multiphase fluids, corrosion, leakage and pipe-wall thickness. He is an author of 20+ publications in peer reviewed conference and journals of IEEE, Elsevier & Wiley. He is the lead inventor of 10+ patents jointly filed with industry partners. Three of his patents have already been granted and licensed to a company. Few other companies have also shown their interest in licensing his patents. During his PhD, he had secured research funding of 2 million USD by writing research proposals to industry. He is a member of IEEE T-MTT society and serves as reviewer of many journals such as “IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques”, “Elsevier Sensors and Actuators A: Physical”, “IEEE Sensors Journal” and “Hindawi Journal of Sensors”.
At a very young age of 28 years, he has received many international awards. He is the recipient of Best Student Paper Award at International Microwave Symposium (IMS) held in San Francisco in 2016. He is also a receipt of Best Three Thesis Award (3MT) at International Microwave Symposium (IMS) held in Boston in 2019. His research work on “Smart pipe joint with integrated leak sensor” has been recognized as top four research projects of oil industry during ADIPEC-2019, which is world’s biggest event of oil and gas industry. In recognition to his efforts for oil and gas industry, he has been awarded with King prize by Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for “Best Invention” of year 2018. He has been runner up in many international level research competitions such as “Falling walls lab” and “Dow sustainability challenge award”.
He has pursued his career as an entrepreneur by co-founding a startup company called “SensoTech”. He is currently serving as Chief Technology Officer of the company. The mission of the company is to develop a revolutionary “multiphase flow sensor” for oil and gas industry, which may resolve long persisting challenges of multiphase metering. The company has already partnered with multiple vendor all over the world to help form the supply chain and the manufacturing process. After obtaining all safety certifications, company has already conducted first successful field trials of “multiphase meter” in the Middle East. The company is soon expected to release commercial version of the product. During the first six months of the company, it has attracted attentions of many clients asking for quotations and possibility of licensing the technology at non-exclusive terms and conditions. The company has already secured seed fund of 1.15 million USD and will close series A funding round of 5 million USD in this quarter.
